Right-wing extremist attack on diversity festival in Bad Freienwalde causes outrage

On Sunday, June 19, 2025, a worrying incident occurred in Bad Freienwalde when the diversity festival “Bad Freienwalde is colorful” was attacked by a group of people, some of whom were masked. This violent attack resulted in minor injuries to at least two people who attended the event. The incident caused outrage in the region and beyond and highlighted the increasing willingness to use violence within the right-wing extremist scene. Investigators are now working on identifying the perpetrators and have already taken measures to clarify the background to the attack. On Thursday, June 22nd, several searches were carried out in the Märkisch-Oderland district, as reported by tagesschau.de.

The suspect we are looking for is a 21-year-old man from the Oderbruch who has committed himself to the neo-Nazi micro-party “The Third Way” and has already taken part in similar demonstrations in Berlin and Brandenburg in the past. The Frankfurt (Oder) public prosecutor's office had applied for the search warrant, and the police measures led to the seizure of cell phones and potentially important items of clothing. Despite the overwhelming evidence, the suspect refused to testify and no arrest warrant has yet been issued.

Skepticism and need for more protection

The incident has alarmed politicians across the country. Brandenburg's SPD parliamentary group leader Björn Lüttmann and CDU parliamentary group leader Jan Redmann are calling for more protective measures for events that focus on diversity and tolerance. Interior Minister René Wilke (independent) expressed concern about the willingness of young right-wing extremists to use violence and warned that complete security through a large number of police officers cannot be achieved. He pointed out that despite the presence of two patrol cars, the festivities cannot be completely protected from right-wing attacks.

The accusation that there was too little police presence at the beginning of the event was made by both parties and initiatives. This shows that the demands for protecting demonstrations against right-wing extremist attacks are high, but often cannot meet the security requirements.

A look back at the developments

Right-wing extremist activities in Germany have increased significantly in recent years. According to verfassungsschutz.de, there were over 37,000 right-wing extremist crimes in 2024, representing an increase of 47.4% compared to the previous year. Of particular concern is the increase in violent attacks, which increased by 11.6%.

The increased willingness to use violence among young right-wing extremists is alarming and makes it clear that social cohesion and tolerance are being seriously questioned. Events like the attack in Bad Freienwalde are part of a larger problem that affects politics, society and the police alike and requires urgent measures and discussions about the appropriate protection and prevention of such attacks.
