Lightning strike in Bärenklau: wildfire quickly extinguished!

A brief thunderstorm caused excitement in Bärenklau: On Wednesday morning, shortly after 11 a.m., the fire department was alerted when a lightning strike set two trees and around 60 square meters of meadow ablaze. A blessing in disguise: The fire brigade was able to put out the fire quickly and there were no injuries, as Niederlausitz Aktuell reports.

The last few days have been tough, as a severe thunderstorm front has hit large parts of Germany, especially in Berlin and Brandenburg. Heavy rain and violent lightning strikes kept many on their toes. A dramatic incident occurred in Cottbus on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, when lightning struck the roof of a single-family home and started a fire there. The fire department also had a major operation there, but luckily the residents remained uninjured, reports Nonstopnews.

Storms lead to chaos

Last week's thunderstorm activity not only caused fires, but also affected traffic on the A10 and A13 motorways, where visibility was severely limited. You could see the water accumulating on gas station premises - a scene that many drivers in the region had to fear.

A certain thrill is included in showers and lightning. The term “strike” refers to the single flight of a lightning bolt, as documented on lightning locating sites. Each strike is detected and displayed on maps that visualize lightning in a region, said LightningMaps.

Traffic accidents and burglaries

In addition to the heated weather, there were also further police operations in the Cottbus region. On Tuesday around 3:00 p.m. there was a crash between a FIAT van and a TOYOTA car, with damage of around 7,000 euros. Fortunately, all occupants were uninjured. The police also had to be deployed on Tuesday evening when a coach collided with a parked AUDI car while maneuvering on Bautzener Straße. There were no injuries here, the damage amounts to around 1,500 euros.

Another incident occurred in Cottbus, where a break-in was reported on a commercial property on Gerhart-Hauptmann-Straße on Wednesday morning. Unknown perpetrators were able to steal 50 meters of copper cable, causing damage of over 1,000 euros. The police officers secured evidence and initiated an investigation.

Things remain exciting in the region: While thunderstorms and lightning caused excitement, everyday life brought its own challenges with traffic accidents and break-ins. We can only hope that the next weather front does not have such dramatic consequences.
