Insolvency shock: Last solar glass manufactory in Brandenburg bankrupt!
In a worrying step, the bankruptcy of Glasmanufaktur Brandenburg GmbH was officially registered on July 7, 2025 in Tschernitz in Brandenburg. This production facility was the last of its kind in Europe and played a central role in solar glass production. The application for bankruptcy is the result of hard international pricing and difficult economic conditions that have been prevailing for some time. Particularly high energy prices and dumping prices from China have put the glass factory under great pressure, which finally led to short -time work since March 2025.
Minister of Economics Daniel Keller expressed dismay about bankruptcy and described the situation as questionable. He particularly emphasizes the risk of dependence on solar products from China. "We are required to improve the framework conditions in Europe before we are entirely at the mercy of the Chinese industry," said Keller. District Administrator Harald Altkrüger also expressed his regret and called bankruptcy a difficult blow for the region and the 247 affected jobs.
background of bankruptcy
The Brandenburg Glass Manufaktur (GMB), under the majority ownership of Borosil Renewables from India, had committed to producing solar glass and special glass for greenhouses for more than 15 years. But competitive pressure from subsidized imports from China was simply too strong. In 2024, Germany imported solar systems worth 1.8 billion euros, 86 percent of them from China. Minister Keller had previously warned of the former Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck and pointed out the urgent need for countermeasures.
The future of the industry
The bankruptcy of the GMB is not the only setback for the German solar industry. In recent years, several companies, including subsidiaries from the Swiss manufacturer Meier Burger and a company in Wolfsburg, have already registered bankruptcy. The signs are on storm, and the question remains how solar glass production in Europe continues. It becomes clear that there is an urgent need for action to get the European solar industry back on track.
The last few days have been challenging for those affected, who now have to worry about their future. The things have not yet been decided, but it is important that everyone involved works together to find a way out of this crisis.
