Police draw positive conclusions: Cottbus city festival inspires despite incidents
There was a lot going on in Cottbus at the city festival last weekend. Despite the record-breaking temperatures, tens of thousands of visitors flocked to the events, which attracted both locals and guests from the region. According to niederlausitz-aktuell.de, the police had a positive assessment during the three days of celebration.
Around 29 reports were registered and the emergency services checked around 60 personal details. The police had to intervene in some cases, so that 26 people were sent off and five people were briefly taken into custody. Fortunately, officers only seized prohibited items such as pepper spray and narcotics in about four cases. A significant part of the security measures at the city festival were focused on increased defense against terrorism, which, according to lr-online.de, makes it increasingly difficult to hold large events.
Crime statistics around the city festival
In addition to the incidents during the city festival, there were also some serious crimes in the area. The mailbox of an apartment building on Finsterwalder Strasse was blown up, causing damage amounting to several hundred euros. The criminal police have started the investigation. Swastika graffiti was also noticed on Görlitzer Strasse, which led to the state security being called in. These were immediately made unrecognizable.
Another incident occurred on Marienstrasse, where a stack of newspapers burned in the hallway of an apartment building - the cause of the fire is attributed to a discarded cigarette butt and arson is suspected.
The local police are also investigating a case where unknown perpetrators broke into a youth club in Guben and stole drinks and a television. A car theft also occurred at the Sachsensorfer bathing lake: an Opel was stolen while swimming, but was recovered after a tip-off in the city area. Two men were arrested who were also in possession of stolen goods and an electric stun gun.
Further incidents in the region
The security situation in the region remains tense. There were several fires in Groß Bademeusel on Sunday - trees and forest floor were in flames over an area of 1,500 square meters, the police are investigating suspected arson. In addition, a driver of a Mercedes “Vito” with an alcohol level that bordered on a traffic offense was stopped and a blood sample was ordered.
Overall, the crime rate in Cottbus remains one of the issues that worries many. Despite the challenges, the city is trying to make events like the city festival attractive and safe.
