Speed cameras on the B102 in Altes Lager: zero accidents, devices shut down!

In the municipality of Niedergörsdorf, one of the most important measures for traffic safety was once: the speed cameras on federal highway 102 in Altes Lager. But since May 1, 2024, these old “star boxes” have been out of operation, which the district administration recently confirmed. However, according to maz-online.de, accidents in this area have “calmed down”, so that there is no urgent need for the speed cameras. The decision to shut down is based on both economic and technical reasons, as the systems are not only old but also lack the necessary spare parts.

The speed cameras were near the Flämingstrasse intersection and the bus stop of the same name. They controlled traffic both in and against the direction of travel and were active around 2,000 times in 2023, which corresponds to an average of five to six non-compliances per day. However, anyone who did not stick to the limits had to face consequences. The fastest driver was even recorded at 104 km/h. Nevertheless, the number of accidents in the area has now fallen to zero, as further measures such as traffic islands have noticeably improved the driving behavior of drivers.

The community's view

Mayor Doreen Boßdorf regretted turning off the speed cameras, but said she had not received any complaints from residents about speeders. “The safety of our children is our top priority,” she explains. Nevertheless, the district sees no reason to set up new speed cameras. The two speed cameras that have been switched off will also remain as dummies in order to draw attention to speeding as a preventive measure.

The decision to use flash units is regularly discussed in Germany. In total, there are over 4,500 stationary speed cameras installed across the country that require all necessary maintenance. This shows how important it is to punish traffic violations and facilitate safety on the roads. According to derbussgeldkatalog.de, both stationary and mobile speed cameras are used to document speeding and thus ensure road safety.

Further developments in road safety

Current statistics show that speeding is the most common traffic offense. In 2024, 1,865,722 speeding violations were registered by men and 547,013 by women in Germany, as official data from the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt show. Even though the speed cameras in Altes Lager have now been switched off, monitoring traffic safety remains an important issue and will continue to be pursued with various measures.

In the discussion about road safety, the focus is not only on flashing measures, but also on the general awareness of road users. Every driver can help make the roads safer - not only by sticking to the speed limit, but also by being generally careful on the road.
