Brandenburg police expand bodycam test – safety for everyone!

Since today, the Brandenburg police have become an exciting venue for technological innovations in policing. The focus is on the use of body cameras. As [Tagesspiegel](https://www.tagesspiegel.de/berlin/bodycams-bei-der-polizei-in-brandenburg-test-soll-ausgeweitt- Werden-14219924.html) reports, the police are planning to expand the test phase and roll it out to at least two other departments.

In the current test phase, around 30 body cameras are in use, particularly in the Teltow-Fläming and Potsdam police stations. Police Commissioner Oliver Stepien emphasizes that these cameras are intended to help make operations more transparent, deter potential violent criminals and secure important evidence.

Protection for police officers and citizens

As Interior Minister Michael Stübgen makes clear, body cameras are an important element for the safety of police forces and violence prevention. Last year, over 2,000 police officers were victims of violence; this worrying number increased slightly in the first half of 2025. The body cameras should not only have a de-escalating effect, but also contribute to the objective investigation of incidents.

Currently, more than 10 police officers from guard and rotating duty are voluntarily taking part in the test and have been intensively trained in how to use the technology. The police officers carry the cameras in a clearly visible external carrying case, which is also being tested. The recordings are automatically deleted after 14 days unless they are needed as evidence or to check legality.

Advanced uses and Tasers

Stepien is already thinking about expanding body cameras, including use in apartments. Currently the focus is still on disputes in public spaces. In a step further, the police are also planning the possible expansion of Tasers to police stations. There are currently around 370 Tasers distributed in the Brandenburg police headquarters, which could increase the possibilities for de-escalation in critical situations.

Although the range of use of Tasers is controversial - especially among people with cardiovascular problems - Stepien emphasizes that they can incapacitate attackers in the short term and, in certain cases, have an effect by simply threatening a Taser.

Technological support through “Super Recognizer”

An innovative approach to fighting crime is the use of special human skills. The police in Brandenburg have two “super recognizers” – recruits who are exceptionally good at recognizing faces and movements. In Berlin, too, five police officers already rely on this special skill full-time. Stepien emphasizes that if the need for body cameras or tasers increases, more body cameras or tasers could be added, but first it is important to evaluate the experience gained.

With the test phase of the body cameras, the Brandenburg police show that they have a good knack for new technologies to increase the safety of both employees and citizens. It remains to be seen what results the evaluation of the tests will bring and to what extent the technologies will be used in daily police work in the future.
