Trebbin: Citizens decide against solar parks near Thyrow!
In Trebbin, a town in the Teltow-Fläming district, an important decision was recently made regarding planned solar parks on the B101. The city council decided on Wednesday not to implement the network-integrated projects “Thyrow-Ost” and “Thyrow-Grundhufen”. This decision was based not least on a citizen survey that took place during the federal election in the spring, where residents of Thyrow and Großbeuthen were able to express their opinions. The results clearly showed that a large part of the population was against the solar parks: 57% rejected “Thyrow-Grundhufen” and even 64% rejected the plans for “Thyrow-Ost”. [maz-online.de].
Mayor Ronny Haase spoke up and explained that he wanted to follow the citizens' vote. While the majority of city councilors did not agree to the development plan for “Thyrow-Ost”, they abstained from the issue of “Thyrow-Grundhufen”. The CDU MP Thomas Berger nevertheless spoke out in favor of the construction and pointed out the financial advantages for the city: over 100,000 euros per year could be generated in this way. The SPD and Green factions agreed with Bergher's opinion, while Marleen Herzlieb from the "Neue List" pointed out the importance of the citizens' vote.
Economic considerations and concerns of local residents
The rejection of solar parks was no coincidence. The population had concerns about the possible loss of value of their properties and the prospect of the solar farm. According to the plans of the company Energy Panels, photovoltaic systems should be built on a total area of 26.5 hectares, which is equivalent to around 18 football fields, just 270 meters from the forest settlement. The distances between the PV systems were supposed to provide enough space for agriculture, but this did not convince the residents.
The citizen survey made it clear that the issue is mixed. The following numbers resulted from the vote for the various solar parks: For “Thyrow-Grundhufen” 43% voted for and 57% against, for “Thyrow-Ost” it was 36.2% in favor versus 63.8% against. These figures prove the Trebbin residents' aversion to the planned solar projects, which would have had the potential to bring in around 500,000 euros annually for the municipality, as rbb24.de reports.
Outlook on future projects
Despite this cancellation, this does not mean the end of all solar activities in Trebbin. Other options have already been identified that are suitable for the location, but not in the immediate vicinity of the already suffering districts. However, resistance to the use of farmland for solar farms is a much-discussed issue that is also on the agenda in other communities. As a report on neuestadt.org says, many municipalities rely on education through solar ambassadors and on weighing up sustainable economic interests.
In summary, the case of the solar parks in Thyrow shows how important the voice of citizens is in the municipal energy transition. It remains to be seen how the city of Trebbin will address the challenges surrounding solar energy in the future. One thing is certain: the discussion remains exciting and innovative ideas are in demand!
