A14 construction stop: East Germany's transport projects are on the brink!

There are currently massive concerns regarding transport planning in East Germany regarding the A14 motorway. How Northern Courier reports, the ambitious new construction and extension of the A14 between Schwerin in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Magdeburg in Saxony-Anhalt is in jeopardy. The project was originally approved by the German Bundestag in 2004 with the aim of closing the gap between the two cities by 2030. The planning and construction period has already lasted over 21 years and has been marked by a large number of complaints from motorway opponents. However, there is now a risk of construction stopping due to a lack of financial resources in the federal budget for 2025.

The Bundestag Budget Committee recently allocated money for bridge and road construction, but not for new buildings. This could significantly jeopardize further construction. Deges (German Unity Highway Planning and Construction GmbH) warns urgently about a lack of money, which could have a negative impact on construction progress. René Domke, spokesman for the FDP group in the state parliament of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, is dissatisfied with this financing discussion and underlines the immense importance of the A14 for economic development and living conditions in the region.

Construction progress on sections

Work is currently underway on several sections of the A14, such as MDR reported. These include, among others, the Stendal motorway bypass, where the Lüderitz – Stendal-Mitte (13 kilometers) and Stendal-Mitte – Osterburg (18 kilometers) sections are under construction. Construction for the Lüderitz – Stendal-Mitte section began in September 2021, with a planned start of traffic for this section in 2026. The preparatory work for the Stendal – Osterburg section has also already started, with completion originally postponed from 2027 to probably 2028.

Another important section, the construction from Seehausen-Nord to Wittenberge with almost 11 kilometers, has been running since October 2020 and is scheduled to be completed by 2026, including a new Elbe bridge. The Dahlenwarsleben – Wolmirstedt section has been under construction since December 2023, but will not be completed until 2029 at the earliest because extensive preparatory work is necessary. The building permit for the Osterburg – Seehausen-Nord section was granted in 2022, but here too there were delays due to ecological measures and archaeological work, so construction is not expected to begin until 2027.

Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030

The Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030, which the entire project is based on, included around 2,000 proposals for the expansion of roads, railways and waterways. The need for these projects has been assessed in terms of future traffic needs and potential benefits, so bvwp-projekte.de. The results of these assessments are documented in dossiers, which are also accessible in the PRINS project information system. This system helps classify projects and provides information about the progress and planning of the relevant infrastructure.

It remains to be seen how the financial uncertainty will affect further plans for the A14 motorway. The tense discussions about financing show how important it is to receive clear commitments from the federal government in order to quickly and efficiently expand the crucial transport axis in eastern Germany.
