Bielefeld surprises Werder Bremen in the cup – Young decides in stoppage time!

Arminia Bielefeld celebrated a real football festival last night. In the DFB Cup they defeated Werder Bremen in a rousing first round at the sold-out Bielefelder Alm in front of 26,247 enthusiastic spectators. The decisive goal came in stoppage time by Isiah Young, who made the fans cheer with his goal in the 90th + 3 minute.

What a game! The game started at a high pace and Bremen had their first big chance right at the start, in the 14th minute, through Marco Grüll. But Bielefeld refused to be intimidated and showed that something special was at stake here today. As the first half progressed, Werder took control and failed to capitalize on their chances, with Felix Agu and Stefano Russo clearly missing in the 33rd and 39th minutes.

A game full of twists

The situation changed dramatically in the second half when Leonardo Bittencourt was shown a yellow-red card for Bremen in the 54th minute. This gave the home team a boost, who now tried to turn the game around. Despite several cautious attacks that initially failed, the pressure remained high.

Particularly striking was the performance of Bielefeld keeper Jonas Kersken, who parried a shot from Grüll in the 82nd minute and thus prevented the equalizer. The pressure on the Bremen defense increased with every minute, and finally the longed-for goal came, a lightning-fast counterattack via Benjamin Boakye, who passed the ball perfectly to Young.

Bielefeld as a cup scare

With this victory, Bielefeld now has a total of three cup wins against Werder Bremen and makes it impressively clear that they always have a surprise in store in the cup competition. Last season, Bremen were eliminated in the quarter-finals against Bielefeld, and in the 2015 season they also suffered a painful defeat in the round of 16. The balance clearly speaks for the team from East Westphalia.

The victory is not only another shining moment in Arminia's club history, but also shows that the team is in good form this season. Further information about the current developments surrounding the club can be found on Arminia's official website arminia.de.

A real cup terror, these are the East Westphalia! The fans can look forward to an exciting season.
