New life for Prenzlau's GDR apartment block: 27 apartments soon ready for occupancy!

A lot is happening in the residential landscape in Prenzlau. The GDR apartment block at Heinrich-Heine-Straße 33 to 43, a historical relic from the period after the Second World War, is currently being extensively renovated. The four-story building, which was built in a heavily damaged city center, is the first large-block residential building and has been through a lot since it was built, reports Northern Courier.

With the renovation, the Prenzlau eG housing cooperative has started an ambitious project that will cost around nine million euros, supported by funding. Preparations are already in full swing: While the outer facade facing Heinrich-Heine-Straße is largely completed, the first apartment floor plans have already been recut, barriers have been dismantled and elevators have been installed. Inside, niches of the former control cabinets will be used to artistically showcase the history of the city and the house. Historical photographs from the GDR era are enlarged and illuminated on large surfaces.

Redesign and equipment

Another highlight of the renovation are the additional balconies, bay windows and the newly created staggered floor, which was lifted onto the roof with a crane at an impressive speed. 75 percent have already been reserved for the 27 apartments in the second construction phase, which are expected to be ready for occupancy in the first quarter of 2026. Only five apartments are currently available for rent. However, those interested should note that a residence permit is required for most apartments.

However, there is a small downer: work on the apartments in the second construction phase (39-43) was delayed due to an unexpected visit from over 50 pigeons. But don't panic - the city is also planning to expand Heinrich-Heine-Straße next year, although this depends on the availability of funding.

Parking spaces and future prospects

New parking spaces will also be created in the courtyard area to further improve the quality of living. With these comprehensive measures, the historic block will not only be modernized, but will also become a place for meetings and living at a high level.

With this development, a piece of history can be experienced in a new way and at the same time attractive living space is created for the future. The commitment of the Prenzlau eG housing cooperative and the support from the city show that old structures often have a good hand for new living environments.
