Kaufhallen was created in the GDR from the end of the 1960s and have now become synonymous with daily purchasing, as they are strongly reminiscent of supermarkets or discounters today. With an area of around 1,400 square meters, in an simply designed architecture, they were the place where "goods of everyday needs" could be acquired. The first department store in Mühlenstrasse was opened in 1964, under the direction of Walter Haak. Manfred Paesler reports how the makeshift skiosk was slowly expanded when the residential area grew. The nostalgic memory of the Ho-Kaumen still lives on , even if it no longer exists.

After reunification, the department store was converted into a savings market, which meant a big change for many residents. Claudia Schröder says that the small business where they had bought many years earlier is now operated by Edeka. Klaus Preuss describes the new appearance of the building complex as much inviting.

a modern monument

For many, the department store is more than just a shop; It symbolically stands for a time when social interaction was very important. The lettering "Kaufhalle" has already adorned many walls and will be remembered for many nostalgically. The logo itself has a special story and is seen as a monument to the GDR's buying halls, which were also cultural meeting points as shopping centers. MDR highlights the development of the Kaufhallen and their role in society.

Overall, it can be seen that the department store in the Templin Südstadt is not just a place of trade, but a piece of history that will always accompany the residents. The operators have a good hand to revive the sense of community, while new customers explore the newly renovated areas.
