Scythe fairy tale in Brüssow: Rain doesn't stop 150 guests!
On Saturday, September 1st, 2025, the fourth scythe mowing competition took place on the orchard in Brüssow. Despite the rainy weather, the approximately 150 visitors did not let their joy be taken away from them and attended the event, which was initiated by beekeeper Norman Glowe and environmental educator Christoph Andre. “There’s something going on,” thought the participants, who came from different regions of Germany. Among them were participants from Rhineland-Palatinate, Hakenheim and arrived from Ruppiner Land and the diverse region around Löcknitz.
This year the competition didn't just stop at mowing technology. There were also numerous information stands on offer, covering a wide range of topics - from nature conservation to garden design to regional art and culture. The Sparkasse Foundation “NaKuNa” offered a creative children’s program under the direction of Susanne Völlm, while Helga-Marie Rehfeld presented the fascinating world of linen fiber. Jeannette from “Netti’s Naturliebe” captivated the little guests with craft activities, and the Schwarmlandhof impressed with delicious quince products.
The competition in detail
This year the competition impressed not only with the skills of the participants, but also with the attractive prizes. First place went to Berit from Thuringia, followed by Harald, who took second place. Both winners came from the three matches in Thuringia and achieved almost identical scores. Third place went to Petra from Krakow, who won a scythe blade guard made from recycled fire hose and an Austrian scythe. There was also a raffle for a complete ostSense among the participants, which added additional excitement to the event.
The event started at 12:30pm with site setup and ended with the exciting awards ceremony at 5:15pm where the winners were announced. Despite the drops of water falling from the sky, a rainbow smiled across the meadow, creating a festive atmosphere.
Treats for everyone
Physical well-being was also taken care of. Herm’s Pizza food truck and Ladies of Popular Solidarity offered delicious food and cakes, while Bio Rollin provided drinks to thirsty throats. This all contributed to the happy atmosphere, which even the rain couldn't dampen.
As the organizers announced, the scything mowing competition will take place again in 2026, again at the end of August. The newly added information stands and the positive response from participants give hope for a successful continuation.
In conclusion, one can say that the fourth scythe mowing competition in Brüssow was not just a competition, but also a colorful community celebration, in which tradition and modern themes were combined in a charming way. Whether with a scythe through wet grass or at exciting workshops - like that Uckermark courier captured, it was an experience for young and old.
