Heavy rain forces the city of Prenzlau to close the seaside resort!

After the heavy rains since Friday, which have led to a veritable overflow of water in the Uckermark, the seaside resort on the Uckerpromenade in Prenzlau was closed today, July 12th. The city administration decided to take this step to ensure the safety of visitors. Tens of thousands of liters of rain have fallen in the last few hours, which is of great benefit not only to allotment gardeners, but also to the forests, which urgently need water. Nevertheless, numerous organizers are suffering from the consequences of the bad weather as the expected visitors fail to materialize, as Nordkurier reports.

Under these circumstances, the Blue Hour Party planned for today was quickly moved to the Uckerseehalle. The organizer wants to offer the guests a dry and protected room so that the event can still take place. This change shows how flexible you have to react to the whims of the weather and is also a clear indication of the challenges that heavy rain events pose for local events.

A look back at traditional events

Another highlight of the region is the traditional blue egg swimming in the seaside resort of Prenzlau, which takes place every year on the Sunday after Easter. The participants swim a short distance in the water and are then rewarded with a blue egg, which is presented by the mayor and the swan queen. The event begins at 2 p.m. and spectators are welcome to watch the spectacle from the shore. In addition, a cake from the “Mühlwerk” in the Panorama Hotel will be raffled off among the participants. Registration starts at 1 p.m. directly on site, as Uckermark Magazin informs.

Serious heavy rain events

Current weather conditions also shed light on the broader impacts of heavy rainfall events on agriculture. According to Landwirtschaft.de, such weather phenomena pose a particular risk to arable farms. The damage resulting from heavy rain depends heavily on the timing of the vegetation. Silted soils can significantly impair plant growth and even lead to the death of entire crops. This particularly affects ripe grain, which can be pressed down by rainfall, leading to crop losses.

Last but not least, the challenges posed by erosion on slopes where fertile soil can be removed are also discussed. With the increase in such heavy rain events in recent years, farmers are forced to adopt soil conservation methods. Measures such as year-round soil coverage or targeted plant cultivation can help mitigate the harmful effects.

Overall, it becomes clear that the weather is not only important for the region's event culture, but also has far-reaching consequences for agriculture and the natural environment. The Uckermark, like many other regions in Germany, is faced with the challenge of dealing with changes in the climate and the associated extreme weather events.
