Electricity, gas and district heating: Neubrandenburgers can save in 2026!

The year 2026 brings good news for consumers in Neubrandenburg: the municipal utilities have announced that they will reduce the prices for electricity, gas and district heating. This announcement was made by Stadtwerke spokeswoman Steffi Schwabauer made and will please many households in the region.

Customers can expect to receive mail from the municipal utility in the coming days and weeks with the details of the price reductions. What is positive for households is that drinking water prices will also remain stable next year. The main reason for the lower prices is the fall in purchasing prices on the energy market. This development should put a smile on the faces of many consumers, even if individual government levies put electricity providers under pressure.

Tangible savings for households

The savings potential is considerable. A four-person household can save up to 210 euros per year on electricity in their own home. Savings of up to 450 euros per year are also possible in the gas sector and savings of around 100 euros in district heating. The prices for these energy sources have now fallen for the second year in a row. Two years ago, many consumers experienced a “price shock” that put a heavy strain on household budgets, but now the municipal utilities seem to be on the right track.

Ingo Meyer, spokesman for the municipal utilities management, emphasizes that the reduced procurement costs will be passed on to customers. However, increased CO₂ costs are dampening the price reductions for natural gas somewhat. Particularly noteworthy is the elimination of the gas storage levy from January 1st, which also eases the price calculation.

Political discussion and challenges

The issue surrounding energy prices is also a topic of intense concern in city politics. In the past there have even been lawsuits against the municipal utilities, with the city of Neubrandenburg being a 100 percent shareholder in the municipal utilities. Around 80 percent of Neubrandenburg households rely on district heating from the municipal utilities, which makes the topic particularly relevant for many citizens.

Consumer advocates are also concerned about the pricing of district heating and are calling for more clarity. These challenges show that despite the positive news of price reductions, dialogue is necessary to find the best solution for all parties.
