In the focus for Western Pomerania: Railway line from Sassnitz to Berlin!

On Monday, June 23, a special train will go to Berlin to Berlin. The goal is the Federal Chancellery, where the expansion of the railway line from Sassnitz to Berlin is to be advertised. Among the participants are two district councilors from Western Pomerania and representatives from different sectors, including 15 mayors from cities such as Stralsund, Greifswald and Anklam. This initiative, which is considered an important step for the region, is supported by Uckermark Kurier.

The talks in the Federal Chancellery, including a meeting with Chancellor's head Thorsten Frei, as well as an exchange with the member of the Bundestag Frank Junge (SPD), aim to receive financial support for the urgently needed expansion. This expansion is intended to increase the pace on the affected route from 120 to 160 km/h and shorten the travel time between Berlin and Rügen by almost half an hour, which benefits both commuters and tourists.

railway line as an important factor for the region

As part of the “Vorpommern Magistral” project, the mayors of the region are calling for a rapid implementation of the rail expansion, especially in the context of the recently put into operation on Rügen. [NDR] (https://www.ndr.de/nachrichten/mecklenburg-vorpommern/baugau-berin-berin-buermeister-schrezen-schrei-Schretten-vorpommernmagistral100.html) reports that the city councils to Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz make it clear that they fear the future planning. These fears are reinforced by the prospect that the expansion of the railway line could be delayed or even discontinued due to financial considerations.

The mayors emphasize that a delay in the project could not only result in economic but also democratic damage to the region. Planned protests in Berlin on September 17 are already in the starting blocks.

The plans of Deutsche Bahn

Deutsche Bahn has announced that it will implement extensive construction projects in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in 2025, which also concern the railway expansion between Berlin and Rügen. According to the Lok Report, not only the speed is increased as part of these projects, but also a comprehensive modernization of the rail infrastructure. At the same time, further train lines are to be renewed in the coming years and digitization should be promoted.

A particularly important point is the general renovation of the Hamburg - Berlin route, which is planned from August 2025 to April 2026. Comprehensive work at the train stations and the track infrastructure are planned. All of this aims to make the rail connections in the region more attractive and reliable and to create the basis for future growth, especially in tourism.

Overall, it can be seen that the Berlin-Rügen railway line is of central importance for the economic development of the Vorpommern region. The concentrated support of local decision -makers illustrates this importance and the urgency to capture the future plans together.
