Inferno in Brinkum: Great fire ten years ago - fire brigade in action!

Brinkum, Deutschland - On May 24, 2015, in Brinkum, in the Diepholz district, a devastating major fire, which demanded the fire brigade's forces over 50 hours. According to a report by Kreiszeitung , the volunteer fire engines were alerted shortly before midnight. In a warehouse of a recycling company in the industrial area on Rodendamm, the fire blazed in full strength and threatened to overturn on adjacent buildings. Over 250 firefighters from the region were deployed, supported by units from Stuhr, Weyhe, Syke, as well as professional fire brigade Bremen and an airport fire engine.

The first successes were recorded three hours after the start of the extinguishing work. The fire was under control at 7 a.m., but the re -extinguishing work went over several days. A total of around eight kilometers of fire hose were laid, and several thousand liters of water per minute had to be pumped. The personnel -intensive and complex fire fighting began with the use of twelve water cannons and several turntable ladders.

evacuation and challenges

The strong smoke development led to the evacuation of the neighboring animal shelter, and Bremer Straße was temporarily closed. Fortunately, despite the enormous damage that goes into the millions, there were no injuries. The assignment is one of the largest that have ever been recorded in the municipality of Stuhr.

After the fire, structural measures were immediately taken to prevent flames from spreading again. This included the implementation of a fire retention system in the recycling company and the introduction of thermal imaging cameras in order to monitor the current status of the company. Furthermore, large-volume fire extinguishers were purchased in order to be better prepared for the future and to counter a critical problem: the improper disposal of lithium batteries and batteries.

Current developments in fire protection

In a larger context, the Center for Fire Statistics of the CTIF Since 1995 a report on world fire statistics. This year's report marks publication No. 28 and includes data from 38 countries and 26 major cities. The statistics examine both the number of fires and the causes of this fire. As part of the “100 Cities - 100 Years” project, there is a deeper analysis of urban fire risks.

The central question of the report is how the fire risks have developed over the past 100 years. Political, cultural and technical events significantly influenced fire protection. Due to the collected data, the researchers provide valuable insights into the fire phenomena of the urban centers and develop models for future risk assessment.

The teachings from dramatic missions such as that in Brinkum contribute to improving fire protection and sensitization of the population. This shows that preventive measures and targeted training can significantly reduce the risk of fire in recycling systems.
