Camper in Germany demand more places and better rest areas!
A current ADAC survey shows that dissatisfaction among motorhome owners in Germany is great. In particular, the comfort of rest areas leaves something to be desired. According to the survey, which was carried out in March 2025 with 1,003 adults who have had a camping vacation since 2022, the biggest criticism is the lack of parking spaces for campers, camping buses and caravans. 53 percent of the respondents expressed the urgent desire for special parking areas.
The examination of the ADAC, which rated 80 rest areas along important motorway routes in Germany, shows terrifying results. Less than every fourth rest area has its own parking spaces for motorhomes or teams. In addition, there are no service offers such as fresh water filling or the option of emptying cassette toilets on the tested systems. These serious defects contribute to the dissatisfaction of the campers, who also pointed out the insufficient signage in the survey: 49 percent complained that the parking facilities for motorhomes are often poorly signposted.
expectations of the camper
The survey not only shows the desire for more parking facilities, but also for additional services. 40 percent of the respondents demand the opportunity to empty cassette toilets, and 42 percent want fresh water points. A significant number of 25 percent is even willing to pay up to 4 euros for such offers. In addition, 45 percent stated that they would pay for a fenced rest area with video surveillance, with 31 percent willing to drive up to ten kilometers from the highway to achieve a safe parking space.
The current figures make it clear that Germany does much worse compared to its neighboring countries. While Austria and Switzerland score values of 69 and 79 points, German rest areas come to just 50 points. Camper who have gained international experience appreciates higher cleanliness, better equipment and the more pleasant ambience in neighboring countries.
needs and challenges
The investigation shows that over 75 percent of the campers indicate that they are more often at German rest areas if their needs are better taken into account. Nevertheless, it remains a challenge for many to find suitable rest areas. 40 percent of the survey participants stated that when you refuel on the highway, the high price level to find uncomfortable. The gastronomy and the sales outlets will also be insufficiently experienced as to what the user experience continues. 44 percent criticize the price-performance ratio of the catering and 38 percent that of the sales outlets.
This dissatisfaction could also be connected to the constantly growing camping trend in Germany. In 2024, the number of new registrations of motorhomes increased. With around 1.8 million approved camping vehicles, which is twice as many as 12 years ago, it is more urgent than ever to take into account the needs of the camper.
The results of the survey and the analysis of the ADAC suggest that a fundamental improvement in the rest stops is required. ADAC experts recommend significantly increase the number of parking spaces equipped for camper. Currently, the rest stops are often inadequate, which does not meet drivers and their leisure needs. Overnight stays on rest areas are not recommended due to safety concerns, since parking spaces and campsites are considered safer.
The ADAC will continue to observe the situation in order to offer the campers in Germany more comfortable and safe travel options.
