Germany is fighting Sweden: Who will be group winners of the European Championship?
The German national women's team did it! After an exhausting 2-1 win over Denmark, the DFB selection qualified prematurely for the quarter-finals of the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025. The big showdown against Sweden is now on Saturday at 9 p.m. in the Letzigrund stadium in Zurich. Even before the last group game, Germany took second place in Group C, behind Sweden, who took over the lead with a clear 3-0 victory over Poland. Germany and Sweden are therefore faced with a decisive duel, because a victory is necessary to become a group winner and thus secure a cheaper way to the semi-finals, which is at least the goal according to DFB sports director Nia Künzer.
The group table shows the current situation:
Team | goals Th> | Points Th> |
---|---|---|
Sweden | 4: 0 | 6 |
Germany | 4: 1 | 6 |
Denmark | 1: 3 | 0 |
poland | 0: 5 | 0 |
The upcoming duel against Sweden
In the last preliminary round game, Germany will wear its red away jerseys, while they were in the first two games in the white home dress. In the history of the two national teams, Germany achieved 21 wins, 8 defeats and 2 draw against Sweden in 31 international matches. The DFB women were particularly strong at European Championships: they won five of the six previous matches, while a draw was the conclusion of the game. The record winners of the European women's championship with eight titles also want to give themselves against the undefeated Swedes, who celebrated two victories in the group phase.
The game is broadcast live on ZDF and at DAZN on TV, the preliminary appearance starts at 8:15 p.m. Moderator Sven Voss and commentator Claudia Neumann, supported by expert Kathrin Lehmann, will accompany the events in the stadium. The game is led by the Italian referee Silvia Gasperotti, who will provide a fair course with her team on the side lines.
the squad and the ambitions
Germany consists of a mix of experience and fresh wind, with 19 field players and three goalkeepers. Ten of them already have vice-European championship titles on the account, while seven newcomers are ready to show their potential in the tournament. The qualification for the Euro 2025 was impressively secured by four victories in four games in League A4. The team goes into the game against Sweden with strong motivation and the unconditional will - a group victory could protect them from a possible quarter -finals.
The Swedish captain Kosovare Asllani has also expressed her ambitions against Germany. Both teams face each other in Zurich on Saturday, and the anticipation of this duel increases daily. Who will conquer the place in the quarter -finals? There is a lot at stake for German women, while Sweden, of course, also wants to defend his pride as an opponent. We can look forward to a gripping football game!
