Drone war escalated: violent attacks on Ukraine at night!
In the night of Tuesday, May 27, 2025, air alarm again rose over Eastern and southern Europe. The Ukrainian Air Force warned of impending attacks in the Sumy, Charkiw, Dnipropetrovsk, Mykolajiw and over the Black Sea towards Odessa. According to Tagesspiegel , Russia used drones of the type Shahed. Explosions in Sumy, near the border with Russia, were recorded, but it remains unclear whether the attacks were as intense as in the previous.
Last weekend and on Monday night there were massive attacks with drones and marching air bodies, which were classified by the Kiev Ministry of Defense as the most violent since the beginning of the war. Ukraine has been defending itself against Russian invasion for over three years and has recently had an increase in air strikes.
The most comprehensive drone attack so far
The situation continues to come to a head: according to SPIEGEL Ukraine has reported the biggest drone attack from Russia since the beginning of the war. These recent incidents show the increasing intensity of conflict dynamics and illustrate that military strategies are increasingly relying on the latest technologies. Drones have proven to be decisive for warfare.
The Ukrainian Minister of Digital Transformation, Mychajlo Fedorow, emphasized the importance of innovation and adaptability since Russia has been marched to Ukraine in 2022. He announced that about 95% of the drones used are produced in Ukraine. However, some key components continue to come from China, Europe or the USA. President Wolodymyr Selenskyj emphasizes that around 30% of the army needs are produced in their own country.
drone war and recruitment
Fedorow sees a future in which drones fight against drones. To cover the need for drones, more than ten companies in Ukraine have developed fiber optic drones and produce thousands of units. Ukraine is closely dependent on the Internet, both in the military and civilian area. A new "unique protection system" for the digital infrastructure was established to support military operations.
In the middle of these developments, however, the decline in voluntary recruitment of soldiers in Ukraine is also determined. In order to counteract this, Selenskyj has reduced the military duty from 27 to 25 years and obliged the men to update their military registration data. The Ministry has also developed an app called Diia to facilitate recruitment for drone units. These changes and the consistent development of drone tactics show the need to adapt to the constantly changing war situation. As Fedorow emphasized, drone operators are of central importance and should not be easily transferred or deducted. These developments reflect a dynamic military strategy that strengthens both digital and physical defense of Ukraine. With the potential of increased use of drones for monitoring and combating on the front line, the importance of this technology for the NATO-east flank is increasingly recognized.
