Edeka under fire: Greenpeace reveals cruel animal husbandry!

Essen, Deutschland - On May 26, 2025, around 20 activists from Greenpeace Before the Essen trade fair against the meat production of the EDEKA company. The protest took place as part of a meeting of large Edeka dealers and was symbolically supported by the use of 5000 yellow confetti hearts. This action should draw attention to the grievances in meat production and demanded animal and climate protection.

The main allegations of Greenpeace were directed against a meat supplier from Edeka, which stands for the form of posture 2. The environmentalists reported injuries, sick and dead pigs from stables that the company supplies. A photo banner who showed suffering animals reinforced the message of the activists. According to Greenpeace, over 80% of EDEKA meat products come from these stables, which accompanied the demand for an immediate improvement in animal husbandry conditions.

Greenpeace criticism and Edeka's reaction

Stephanie Töwe, agricultural expert at Greenpeace, expressed that Edeka “shamelessly advertises cheap meat”, while the company is at the same time promoting promises for more animal welfare and climate protection. Edeka described the meat plant in question as "the world's first CO2-free meat factory" and emphasizes that animal welfare is a central concern.

In a statement, Edeka decidedly rejected the allegations and distanced itself from any form of cruelty to animals. The company representatives confirmed that the current incidents that Greenpeace had reported are examined and announced that they wanted to expand their vegan range.

forms of posture and market conditions

The attitude 2, which EDEKA portrays as above the legal standard, is also widespread for other supermarket chains. Nevertheless, it is rated by a legal opinion as constitutional and animal welfare. EDEKA itself has not been running a fresh pig and poultry meat of the form of husbandry 1 in its own brand range for years. At the same time, the Edeka meat works seem to be expanded, with sales of around 670 million euros in 2023.

The discussion about meat consumption in Germany is becoming increasingly important. According to Environmental -im lessons , the awareness of the negative effects of meat consumption on climate, environment and health increases. Nutritional policy recommendations advise to reduce meat consumption and to consume environmentally friendly products.

In addition, an increase in vegetarians and vegans in Germany is recorded, while per capita meat consumption remains high. At around 60 kg per year, meat consumption in Germany is twice as high as in the 1950s. These figures illustrate the challenges that companies like Edeka stand in order to meet expectations of sustainable and animal -friendly production.
