Discover Frankfurt's religious diversity: photo workshop in June and August!

Sonnemannstraße 13, 60314 Frankfurt, Deutschland - Frankfurt am Main, known for its religious diversity, is the focus of an exciting workshop that deals with the exploration of religious neighborhoods through photography. The workshop "Discover religious neighborhoods photographically" takes place at the Volkshochschule Frankfurt and offers interested participants the opportunity to experience both the artistic and the scientific perspective on faith communities. The first appointment will take place on June 28, 2025, followed by further days on June 29 and August 23 and 24, 2025.

The workshop is aimed at experienced photographers and beginners and is led by photojournalist Julius Matuschik. Participants can hope for practical tips on religious -sensitive photography, while they are also working on individual photo projects that can later be presented in a small exhibition. These projects aim to visually grasp the concept of the "religious neighborhoods" and to reflect on what makes religious communities in the city.

scientific context and objective

The workshop, organized in cooperation with the research association "Dynamics of the Religious" and Goethe University, also offers scientific impulses by members, including ethnologist Susanne Fehlings, Islamic scholar Albrecht Fuess and historian Karoline Müller. The focus is not only on artistic photography, but also on the analysis of how religious groups are visually presented in Frankfurt and what role visual markers play in the perception of these communities.

A central concern of the workshop is to document the associations of the participants to the term “religious neighborhoods”. This is intended to stimulate a deeper discussion about the social and religious landscape of Frankfurt. In addition, travel grants are in prospect for foreign participants, which could expand the base of participants.

event details and registration

The event is offered at the Volkshochschule Frankfurt at Sonnemannstrasse 13 and online. The registration is necessary and takes place via the adult education center. The dates are also in presence with the possibility of participating in one or two online meetings. Through cooperation with institutions such as the Academy for Islam in Science and Society and the Frobenius Institute, the versatility of the workshop is underlined.

Frankfurt, as a city with numerous religious communities, offers a rich setting for the thematic explorations in the workshop. The Council of Religions, which includes nine large groups, including Christian churches and Bahai communities, is addressed as a reference to the diversity of religious landscape. The workshop thus represents a valuable opportunity to deal with the dynamic and multi -layered aspects of religion and neighborhood in this living city.
