EU plan on the home stretch: 55% fewer emissions by 2030!

EU, Europa - The EU approaches the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 55 percent compared to 1990 by 2030. According to a current report by bnn.de is impressive: emissions should already be reduced by about 54 percent. EU climate commissioner Wopke Hoekstra is optimistic that the specified goals can be achieved.

since 1990, emissions have been reduced by 37 percent, while the economy has grown by almost 70 percent. The national climate plans (NECP) of the EU countries form the basis for the evaluation of progress. The plans of Belgium, Estonia and Poland are still pending, but their overall objectives have already been included in the evaluation.

Common responsibility of the Member States

The EU Commission emphasizes that achieving the climate goals is a common responsibility of all Member States. However, there is a need for action in the traffic, buildings and agriculture sectors to close the still existing gaps. It also shows that the target for renewable energies has a gap of only 1.5 percent, but measures to increase energy efficiency are urgently required.

An earlier analysis of the NECPS from 2023 predicted a reduction in emissions by 51 percent. Part of the comprehensive plan is the Green Deal, a package of measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in various sectors. However, the implementation of these requirements in the Member States is as challenging.

Promotion of renewable energies

The EU's legislative is driving the development of renewable energy sources, which are intended to serve as alternatives to fossil fuels. At the moment, over 20 percent of the energy consumed in the EU comes from renewable sources, reports . In December 2022, MPs called for faster permits for power plants that are operated with renewable energy sources, including solar collectors and wind turbines.

In addition, the promotion of renewable hydrogen and offshore energy sources, including wave power, is promoted. EU financing for natural gas infrastructure projects are gradually discontinued, and the funds are instead redirected into hydrogen and green offshore energy infrastructures. In September 2023, the parliament supported an agreement to promote renewable energy sources and to reduce the dependency on Russian energy. The aim is to increase the proportion of renewable energy in the final energy consumption by 2030 to 42.5 percent, while the Member States are even 45 percent.

Finally, experts warn that, despite the progress in the next year, binding intermediate goals for 2040 must be established in order to achieve a reduction of at least 90 percent by 2040 compared to 1990. A commission's legislative proposal is expected until the summer break. The flexibility in implementation could be increased by recognizing climate certificates from non-EU countries.
