Passenger numbers in the Diepholz district: an upswing for public transport!

Syke, Deutschland - The passenger numbers in the Diepholz district have increased in the state bus lines, as Jens Heidenreich reported on the public transport team in the school committee in Syke. An analysis that took into account data from 2021 to 2024 has shown that the numbers rose continuously after a decline during the corona pandemic. The increase in passenger numbers since the introduction of the Germany ticket is particularly remarkable. This has contributed to a significant growth of local public transport (public transport) in the region.

The automatic counting devices that have grasp passengers for four years show significant progress. The counted lines include the 123 (Bassum-Sulingen), 137 (Diepholz-Sulingen), 138 (Sulingen-Nienburg) and 150 (Syke-Bruchhausen-Vilsen). While line 150 has a "somewhat weaker offer", the data of the Zweckverband Verkehrsverbund Bremen/Lower Saxony (ZVBN) show an increase in passenger numbers of 29 % between 2021 and 2022 in the region and even 48.8 % in the district of Diepholz.

Current trends in public transport

In the total Germany, the passenger volume in line traffic with buses and trains in 2023 increased by 7 % compared to the previous year, as from the latest statistics of Destatis . A total of almost 10.9 billion passengers were counted, but this is 8 % below the pre-Corona level of 2019. Especially in local transport with railways and trams, there was an increase of 9 %, while long -distance traffic by bus recorded a remarkable increase of 39 %.

The Germany ticket, which has been in force since May 1, 2023, has contributed significantly to the increase in passenger numbers in public transport. Among the bus companies that use automated passenger counting systems (AFZS) are even higher than the average. These systems enable precise surveys and thus contribute to a better understanding of the usage behavior.

sustainability and mobility transition

The members of the VDV promote 26 million passengers by bus and train every day and actively contribute to the mobility turnaround. In 2023, around 9.4 billion passengers used public transport of VDV member companies. These companies also did 82 billion person kilometers, which underlines the relevance of public transport in the current mobility situation.

The ecological advantages are also significant: the public transport has saved 10 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions, and every Kilometer by public transport saves an average of 95 grams of greenhouse gases. These figures illustrate the important role of public transport in the sustainable development and combat climate change.

Overall, the increasing passenger numbers show a positive trend in both the Diepholz district and throughout Germany. The challenges created by the Corona pandemic seem to have been overcome, and the introduction of the Germany ticket marks a turning point for public transport
