Family drama in Passau: Man deliberately drives into a group of people!

A shocking incident occurred in Passau on Saturday when a 48-year-old man deliberately drove his car into a group of people. Five people were injured, including both his wife and his five -year -old daughter. The background of the incident seem to be closely connected to an ongoing custody dispute. The driver, an Iraqi citizen, was arrested on site and heard immediately. The Passau public prosecutor then requested an arrest warrant for an urgent suspicion of attempted manslaughter in five cases. On Sunday afternoon, he was shown to the investigative judge at the Passau district court, who issued the arrest warrant, reports the PNP.

The injured person includes the driver's wife (38 years), who suffered severe, but not life-threatening injuries, as well as a 39-year-old woman. The driver's daughter and two other women aged 18 and 52 were slightly injured, with the three of them being released from the hospital. The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. in a street near the main train station in Passau and also left damage to property because a front garden was damaged in the collision. Everyone involved comes from Iraq, which complicates the investigation by the Passau criminal police inspection and the public prosecutor's office. The small newspaper emphasizes that the possible trigger for the brutal act was the custody dispute of the man.

background to violent crime

The present incident is not only a tragic individual case, but also underlines the challenges associated with violent crime in Germany. According to Statista, violent crimes make up less than 4% of all police crimes, but they significantly influence the feeling of security of the population. For example, around 217,000 violent crimes were registered in 2024, the highest number since 2007.

In addition, statistics show that the number of acts of violence has risen again since 2021 and that almost a third is above the low of 165,000 cases. The number of annual victims of violence is also around 260,000, with the actions against emergency services particularly standing as worrying, with maximum stalls in recent years. A survey from May 2024 showed that 94% of German violence and aggression against people from politics, police and rescue services see as a big problem.
