Flags for democracy: CDU sets signs against the AfD!
in the Lutherstadt Wittenberg and throughout the district have been seen on public buildings since May 23, the day of the Basic Law. This measure was ordered by the CDU district administrator to send a strong signal against the influence of the AfD, which won in eight federal states in the local elections in June 2022. Sepp Müller, CDU member of the Bundestag, emphasized that it was important to take a clear attitude against the AfD to limit its influence. The decision to flag is part of a strategy to anticipate and bypass the AfD's supposed proposals, such as the all-year flag with black and red and gold in the Jerichower Land district council.
The AfD has already established new voters in Ortrand, where it received over 47 percent of the vote in the Bundestag election. Niko Gebel, Official Director of Ortrand, describes the reality of the voter structure and emphasizes that cooperation with some AfD representatives is possible, even if it warns of extreme views. This presents the CDU with a challenge, as Jana Schimke, a CDU MP, clarifies. She warns of the self -abandonment of her party through too much proximity to the AfD, while several incidents can already be observed in the region.
political fire walls and their effect
The political landscape in Germany has been under pressure for years through right -wing extremism, which is a continuous danger to democratic structures. Historically, there were already fire walls in the Federal Republic against various parties, especially against the PDS and the Left Party. These fire walls, which have lost radiance since 1994, show how political demarcation tries to counteract extreme thinking.
The CDU/CSU had previously dispensed with a fire wall against non -constitutional right -wing parties and thus created a difficult space in which right -wing extremism can thrive in Germany. The Weimar Republic is an example of where the lack of clearly defined limits led to a division of society and gained extremist forces in power.
Current developments and the role of the AfD
Right -wing extremist structures in Germany are diverse and dynamically react to social developments. The AfD, which has been considered an "right -wing extremist suspicion" since 2021 and was officially classified as "secured right -wing extremist" on May 2, 2025, plays an important role in this context. This classification illustrates the continuous threat to democracy and social cohesion through right -wing extremist views and populism.
The handling of right -wing extremism requires a differentiated view of the structures that have formed within these movements. Informal groups, as well as formally organized parties, use the fear and uncertainties among the population to spread their ideologies. The omnipresent of these structures and networking over social media make it difficult to combat right -wing extremism. In addition, the current social situation, combined with a growing demand for right -wing extremists, is a serious challenge for democracy.
With the aim of acting politically and clarifying the gap between democratic and right -wing populist views, it remains to be seen which strategies the parties will develop in order to counteract right -wing extremists and to maintain social stability. Political fire walls are only as strong as the social foundation on which they are built.
The persistent debates show how necessary it is to proceed on both a social and political level against right -wing extremists and to maintain the democratic understanding of values in order to prevent further influence of these groups.
