Glass fiber expansion in Stuhr: Delays cause unrest among citizens

Stuhr, Deutschland - The fiber optic expansion in the municipality of Stuhr is progressing, but there are numerous challenges that hinder progress. Wirtschaftsfoerer Peer Beyersdorff informed about the current state of expansion in the Committee on Economic Affairs and Finance. Both the current and plan supply were discussed. In particular, the Homes Activated Quote, which depicts the number of connections with an active contract, as well as the Homes Connected, which includes the number of addresses connected with fiber fiber without a contract, play an important role in the evaluation of the project. The focus here is increasingly on active use instead of just letting glass fiber is laid.

A total of around 12,800 address points are available in Stuhr. These are divided into several categories: green areas with the DocSIS 3.1 standard that offer a maximum of 1,000 Mbit download, and blue areas in which connections with more than one gigabit are available. So far, 408 house transfer points (HÜP) have been created as part of a funding program, and two schools are still active in the funding process. However, no information on the bandwidth could be found for 340 addresses, which means that they are considered potentially eligible.

Current challenges

The expansion by GVG glass fiber is hesitant. Despite the contracts that have already been concluded, there has been no significant progress so far. Beyersdorff plans to speak to GVG again in early June in order to obtain clarity about the further procedure. A citizen from Varrel also appealed to the insufficient communication on the part of GVG. Beyersdorff expects the expansion by GVG to be completed in about two years, while it appreciates a period of one to one and a half years for the German fiber.

In contrast, the pre -marketing of the German fiber optics in Seckenhausen was successful, even if a specific expansion date is still pending. If the expansion is successful, over 11,500 fiber optic connections could be realized in the municipality, which corresponds to a cover of 92 percent. However, the development of remote addresses remains a challenge that makes a incoming funding program of the district necessary.

free fiber optic connection

In addition, GVG fiber optics offers the opportunity to get a free fiber optic connection into the building by October 31, 2021. This measure is aimed at around 8,800 households and companies in the districts of Brinkum-Süd, Fahrenhorst, Moordeich, Neukrug and Varrel. The expansion takes place in their own purpose, which brings no costs for the city or the citizens. The prerequisite for planning is that at least 40 % of households and companies conclude a contract. Another advantage of the FTTH network (fibre to the home) is that the bandwidths are individually provided without division with neighbors, which also prevents speed slumps in the evening.

In Germany, fiber optic expansion is comparatively slow despite the multitude of initiatives. According to Statista , the fiber optic content in Germany is only around 11 percent, which leads to number 36 in the OECD country ranking in international comparisons. This has prompted the Federal Government to develop a gigabit strategy that aims to connect 50 percent of all households to the fiber optic network by the end of 2025.

The population in Stuhr looks forward to the progress in fiber optic expansion in view of the developments and hopes for a quick clarification of the open questions and the conclusion of the construction projects.
