Third hybrid ferry Grasbrook starts in Hamburg after a long delay!

Hamburg, Deutschland - A new era of environmentally friendly traffic has started in Hamburg. On May 22nd, the third harbor ferry with hybrid drive arrived in the Hanseatic city. This ferry, which will be called "Grasbrook", was taken over by HADAG after its transfer was delayed by six months. Technical problems and the late delivery of replacement components to the shipyard in Tangermünde contributed to this delay. The hybrid ferry was transported due to the low water level of the Elbe with a bleached, an inland freight ship.

The “Grasbrook” is the youngest member of a new ferry ferries that are supposed to offer environmentally friendly transport. Your baptism is planned for July, although the ship has been in operation since the last week. Originally, the ship should have been brought to Hamburg by the SET shipyard in Tangermünde in December, but the stacking run took place on September 23. With a price of 8.5 million euros, the hybrid ferry is equipped with an innovative plug-in hybrid drive, which uses electric drive when put on and off and uses a diesel engine on the route to protect the batteries.

ferries with the latest technology

The “Grasbrook” is part of a latest program by HADAG to expand your fleet and to reduce CO2 emissions. In the coalition agreement, the SPD and the Greens emphasize the need to increase the Hadag fleet and to advance the decarbonization. A total of three hybrid ferries are to be put into operation, and already in September the first hybrid ship of HADAG, the "new territory", baptized, was followed by the sister ship "Finkenwerder" in October. These new ships have a modern drive system with two batteries that are charged at the fish market at night.

The Hybrid ferry type 2030, from Hadag, Voith, Set Shipbuilding and Development Society and Navalue developed, has a length of about 33 meters and a width of 8 meters. It offers space for up to 250 passengers and multifunctional areas. The ship is powered by two newly developed EVSP 9x5/100 with integrated permanent magnet electric motors from Elin engines. The maximum speed is up to 13 knots, while five-winged electrical Voith Schneider propeller ensure low pollutant and noise emissions. Before the commissioning, Voith carried out special training for the captains of HADAG to illustrate the advantages of the new drive.

real -time data for more transparency

In addition to the new ships, HADAG will also improve their service for passengers. From June 18, 2024, the ferries offer a new service, in which real-time data is transmitted to the HVV app and the website via travel times. This should give users the opportunity to pursue the next departures and to view information about possible driving failures within the next two hours. The board of HADAG, Martin Lobmeyer, said that this service is based on the request of passengers and should contribute to creating more transparency and reliability in ferry operation. However, lines 72 and HBL from Blankenese to Cranz are currently not included in this service.

In summary, Hamburg shows with the introduction of the hybrid ferries and the new real-time data service that the city makes efforts to promote more environmentally friendly and transparent traffic in water traffic.
