On June 1, 2025, Laura Philipp secured the title at the European Championship at the Ironman in Hamburg and triumphed in a gripping competition against Katrina Matthews. With a fantastic time of 8:03:13 hours, she celebrated her third EM title. Philipp, 38 years old and from Neckargemünd, crossed the finish line two minutes ahead of Matthews, which took a strong second place. This was her first long-distance triathlon of the season and served as a decisive form test for the upcoming World Cup in Hawaii on October 11th. Philipp is automatically qualified for the World Cup as the defending champion, while Matthews had already completed an Ironman in Texas five weeks ago.

The competition in Hamburg started with a delay of 45 minutes due to a thunderstorm and finally started at 7 a.m. The professional women set off on the 3.8 km long swimming route in the inland and outside. Together they ended the swimming distance in 54:38 minutes. While Matthews, Philipp and Norwegian debutante Solveig Løvseth triumphed in the first disciplines, the defending champion Jackie Hering could not keep the connection early during the bike route.

exciting duel between Philipp and Matthews

After the swimming route, the athletes dominated cycling, with Matthews giving an impressive time of 4:22:45 and taking the lead. A hard duel between Philipp and Matthews continued in the marathon, with both completing the first half marathon with a time of 1:18. Matthews in the meantime could be in the lead with up to 45 seconds, but Philipp quickly caught up and overtook them at kilometer 33 before expanding her lead.

Philipp's final time of 8:03:13 makes this competition one of the fastest and closest Ironman finishes in history. Matthews finished with a time of 8:05:13 and Løvseth finished third with 8:12:28. This race not only promoted the individual performance of the athletes, but also impressively demonstrated the high competition in triathlon sports.
