Dresden Zwinger: Last steps before the big opening!
Sophienstraße, 01097 Dresden, Deutschland - The Dresden Zwinger , a unique baroque building and an important tourist attraction in the Saxon state capital, stands before its comprehensive Interior renovation. This work should be completed by the end of August 2025. The majority of the measures that have been carried out since October 2012 have already been carried out.
The renewal of two of four fountains and the successful completion of media civil engineering is one of the tasks that have already been completed. A new access ramp was also built. In the western half of the kennel, the lawn mirror and the path surfaces are restored, which means that almost half of the western courtyard is now accessible. The work is currently concentrated on the eastern half of the courtyard, where landscaping work is still being carried out.
financing and building history
The approved total costs for the renovation amount to around 15.4 million euros. As part of the renovation measures, a total of 58.4 million euros have been invested in the maintenance of the kennel since reunification. This also includes the last renovation work on the Kronentor, which was last restored between 1985 and 1990. In the current renovation, 22 attic masculptures and other sandstone parts were successfully restored, while further repairs on rainfall pipes and lightning protection systems are still necessary.
A look at the history of the kennel shows that the monumental complex between 1709 and 1728 under the Elector August was built to the strong and is one of the most important building in late baroque. It consists of six pavilions as well as several arches and long galleries, which surround a symmetrical courtyard. The 698 sculptures are also unique, of which around 30 originals come from the construction period.
tourist importance and conservation measures
The kennel is visited annually by a large number of tourists and, together with the Semperoper, the Frauenkirche and the Residenzschloss, is considered one of the most important tourist attractions in "Elbflorence". The renovated facility houses three museums of the state art collections and was inaugurated in 1719. The preservation of these cultural treasures is funded by the Free State of Saxony annually.
As part of the extensive renovation measures, archaeologists have also identified the remains of a suspected baroque garden and traces of medieval development, which were covered again. These measures are part of the overarching goal of preserving the kennel in its historical splendor and at the same time guarantee modern security standards.
arrival and visitor information
The kennel is centrally located in the Dresden old town . Visitors can travel comfortably by train or the S-Bahn to Dresden Central Station, from where numerous tram and bus lines lead to the kennel.
