VfL Osnabrück surprised: coach Antwerp dismissed despite relegation!

VfL Osnabrück has separated with immediate effect from coach Marco Antwerp and assistant coach Frank Döpper. This decision was made, although the team secured the relegation in the third division. Managing Director Michael Welling explained that a structural and personnel realignment in the sporting area was necessary. The separation is already the third this season after Uwe Koschinat was released in September and Pit Reimers in December. Antwerp took over the coaching position in December and achieved an average of 1.68 points per game, but missed the qualification for the DFB Cup.

The release of Antwerp comes as a surprise because he can still look back at the end of the season. However, almost every coaching change can also be justified with the need for fresh wind and new impulses for the team. VfL Osnabrück has experienced a constant back and forth in the coaching posts in recent months.

new head coach for VfL

As a result of the separation of Antwerp, VfL Osnabrück has already signed a new coach. The ex-Essen Marco Antwerp not only returns to the coaching bank, but is also equipped with a clear order: the next two games until the winter break must be won. In his career so far, Antwerp has proven that he has been experienced in the third division and can find proven solutions in relegation.

Antwerpen's experience as a trainer is clearly shown in his balance sheet, which is over 1.5 points per game in 152 third division. His successes include the rise of Eintracht Braunschweig to the 2nd Bundesliga as well as the rescue of SC Preußen Münster 2018 and 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the 2020/2021 season. He also secured the class of SV Waldhof Mannheim last season. Antwerp will lead his first training session on Friday, while he will be on the sidelines against Rot-Weiss on Sunday at 4.30 p.m.

restructuring and new goals

The employment of Antwerp is carried out in the course of a comprehensive restructuring of the association. Managing Director Dr. Michael Welling made it clear that Antwerp meets the requirements that the association places on its new trainer. It is also interesting that the new trainer was active for Rot-Weiss Essen in the past, while Uwe Koschinat, who now succeeds VfL, was also also active at VfL.

Frithjof Hansen, who is currently the U19 coach of the association, supplements the coaching team for the time being, while an official presentation by Antwerp in a press conference on Friday at 5 p.m. on VfL-TV. For VfL Osnabrück there is an exciting phase in which the course must be set for the future.
