Dachauer Straße, München, Deutschland - The renovation of the barrel hall in the creative district of Munich is delayed considerably and will not be completed before 2028. This decision raises questions about the existing construction work, which have been taking place in the district on Dachauer Strasse continuously since 1926. The interior design of the Jutierhalle is currently on schedule, while the barrel hall has to deal with serious problems. In inspections in 2024, it was found that load -bearing components are significantly damaged by nitrate pollution.

Nitrate renovation in the barrel hall should be completed by the end of 2025. The construction department has confirmed that the work to build the planned green spaces in the creative park can only begin after the barrel hall has been completed. Another important point is that from spring 2027 on a free area between the two buildings, one of the planned playgrounds should be started.

The general repair of the barrel hall has turned out to be more complex than originally thought. Damage was particularly discovered on the concrete structure. Nitrate can make reinforcement steel brittle, which in the worst case could lead to unpredictable breaking. This damage image is not recognizable from the outside and is reminiscent of similar cases as the elephant house in the Hellabrunn zoo. Building officer Jeanne-Marie Ehbauer describes the comprehensive repair of the halls as an important cultural-political project that is of great importance for the artistic scene in Munich.

The financial resources for the renovation are around 128 million euros, although unforeseen additional costs are currently not calculated. The construction department hopes to cover these unexpected expenses with a risk reserve. The planned measures include the exchange of the damaged reinforcement, the introduction of additional steel and the renewal of train straps, foundations and supports.

Both halls are part of a larger plan to revitalize the creative quarters on Leonrodplatz. The barrel hall is to become a central performance location for the free theater scene in Munich.
