Milseburghütte in the Rhön: 400 meter hole for a new hiking destination!
in the district of Fulda, more precisely at Hofbieber, is currently being worked eagerly at the new Milseburghütte. For about a month, a special company from the Ore Mountains has been running a 400 meter long hole through rock in the Rhön. This measure is considered crucial for the project, the final inauguration of which is planned for autumn 2025. The drilling work, which prove to be challenging due to the amount of over 800 meters and the hard basalt rock, are only the beginning of the extensive construction work.
The laying of the foundation stone took place in September 2023 and the actual fundamental work followed. Mayor Markus Röder reports that two thirds of the drilling line are currently being achieved. The last 100 meters are particularly important to ensure the correct alignment. In the coming weeks, empty pipes will be laid, which will later be important for the supply lines. The entire construction project comprises costs of 2.4 million euros, of which the Hessian state government has presented a funding notice of over one million euros to the municipality of Hofbieber to support the reconstruction.
Important support for tourism
In order to strengthen regional tourism and local gastronomy, the reconstruction of the Milseburghütte is particularly supported. The original building from 1884 had to be demolished in 2022 due to dilapidation after the old hut was closed in October 2019. The new guest room will offer space for 50 seats and also include an exhibition area. Mayor Röder emphasizes the importance of this renewal for the tradition and future of the region.
The Milseburghütte is located in a scenic and ecologically valuable area, in the FFH area as well as in the EU bird protection area "Hessische Rhön" and the core zone of the UNESCO biosphere reserve Rhön. This brings strict requirements for planning and construction to protect the environment and biodiversity, as Environment Minister Priska Hinz emphasizes in an explanation.
promotion of rural spaces
The reconstruction of the Milseburghütte is part of a wider offensive of the Hessian state government, which was launched in February 2018 with the “Land has future - Heimat Hessen” initiative. This offensive aims to promote rural regions in Hesse, especially in the area of mobility and infrastructure. Around 105 million euros are available for the current years 2023 to 2027, while a total of almost 3 billion euros in a double budget 2023/2024 are planned for rural areas in Hesse.
The renewal of the Milseburghütte is expected to be completed in 2025 and thus make a popular hiking destination accessible again. The construction progress continues to be followed carefully, and all trades have already been awarded so that the interior design can be continued as planned.
Overall, the project not only shows the efforts to preserve traditions, but also the commitment of the Hessian state government for the development and strengthening of rural regions.
