There are still 72,000 Germans without health insurance – what now?

In Germany, around 72,000 people will live without any health insurance in 2023 - a value that represents less than 0.1 percent of the total population. It has these frightening numbers Deutschlandfunk published. What is particularly striking is that around 75 percent of the uninsured people are inactive, including many pensioners and students aged 26 and over. This development raises questions, especially since Germany has a statutory health insurance requirement for all residents.

Like that Federal Statistical Office further informed, of the 72,000 people without health insurance, 61 percent are men, which corresponds to around 44,000 men. In addition, another 198,000 people who also do not have health insurance are entitled to medical care - including asylum seekers, social welfare recipients and those doing voluntary military service. This information comes from the microcensus, an annual survey that sheds light on the living conditions of about one percent of the population.

Insurance status at a glance

The entire insurance landscape in Germany is diverse: around 9 million people, i.e. around 11 percent of the population, have private health insurance. Here, too, there are almost 2.4 million relatives with family insurance. In contrast, 73.3 million citizens - around 89 percent - are legally insured, with 16.8 million people counting as family-insured relatives. Of those legally insured, a total of 5.1 million people have voluntary insurance status, often self-employed or high-earning employees.

But what do these 72,000 people without insurance need? Well, they form part of a broader discussion about the accessibility of healthcare services in the country. The numbers illustrate the need to take compulsory health insurance seriously and address the needs of everyone in the country. Those who have no income or do not have health insurance for other reasons have it particularly difficult.

Insight into the media world

The analysis of the population and their insurance status shows that society is facing challenges that must be addressed. Whether compulsory health insurance or access to digital media - issues that affect us all and that we cannot escape.
