Fight for Niddastraße: Legal opinion blocks Crack Center in Frankfurt!

In Frankfurt am Main, an owner initiative in the Bahnhofsviertel has submitted a legal opinion that is directed against a planned addiction center for crack addicts in Niddastraße 76. As the FAZ , the expert opinion was commissioned by a resident at the FPS. It was sent to city councilors and the health director Elke Voitl (the Greens) and Mayor Mike Josef (SPD).

The report certifies that such an institution is generally permitted, but certain requirements must be met. The development plan for the property defines it as a core area in which social and health institutions are allowed. Nevertheless, the planned facility is considered not permitted, since it goes beyond the previous outpatient drug aid offers in size, scope and intensity.

fears of the neighbors

Critics of planning fear that the center could create a social focus. The planned facility would only concentrate on crack addicts and would be open around the clock. The report argues that such an institution could violate the consideration requirement. In this regard, Social Affairs Director Voit has confirmed and announced that the arguments are examined by the legal office.

The Frankfurt CDU parliamentary group has also requested that the confidentiality of the proposed resolution to the addiction aid center have applied. The advice should take place in the non-public part of the main and finance committee in order to bring more transparency into the process.

Inadequate information for tenants

The plans for the new addiction aid center are not only controversial at the owner initiative, but also among the local tenants. According to a report by Hessenschau Friedberg and a long-established yoga studio, not informed about the plans. These only experienced by chance of the project, the social department recently made the plans public. The tenants are concerned about the effects that such an institution could have on the neighborhood.

The social department plans to terminate the remaining tenants as soon as the rental or the purchase of the building has been decided. The notice period for commercial properties is only three months.

goal of the addiction aid center

The planned center aims to shift the crack scene from the road to a building. The northeastern part of Niddastraße is considered the epicenter of crack epidemic in Frankfurt. Nevertheless, there are concerns that the center could move more drug addicts to Frankfurt, which could attract dealers and new consumers. The concerns of the residents about a possible increase in drug addiction are a central topic in the discussion.
