Captain at the sea and stormy turning: Police regatta on Lake Constance!
Langenargen, Deutschland - On June 7, 2025, the 40th International Police Regatta took place on Lake Constance, which attracted participants from different countries and federal states. As the Swabian reports, 140 participants took part in 32 sailing boats, whereby each boat had to have at least one police officer on board. The event took place in the port of Langenargen and served not only the sporting competition, but also to promote the community among the police authorities.
for the first time Michael Giss, the head of the Bundeswehr Baden-Württemberg, took part in the regatta as the "captain of the sea". At the event, which was under the patronage of Interior Minister Thomas Strobl, it became clear that more than just sporting skills were asked. The boats had to be occupied by relatives of police departments or other authorities, which made the regatta a special event within the police community.
weather -appropriate challenges
At the beginning of the regatta there was a doldrum, which was a challenge for some teams. However, the weather conditions changed quickly and stormy winds caused additional difficulties. During the regatta, a dinghy capped, and another boat was in distress due to a defective rowing. Fortunately, the presence of numerous police boats was on site, which ensured that no serious problems occurred.
The police chief of Ravensburg and Constance, Uwe Stürmer, was also present and emphasized that his interest was not in the competition itself. This made it clear that the regatta was less about victory than the sense of community and the exchange among the authorities.
winner and tradition
A boat from the Ulm criminal police won the main prize at the competition, which the local police delighted. The police regatta on Lake Constance has a long tradition and is very popular, not only with police masters, but also with other authorities. The Förderverein Internationale Police Regatta Bodensee e.V. and the police headquarters organizes the event, which was again a great success this year.
The regatta illustrates the popularity of sailing in Germany. According to Statista, sailing is also greatly valued in the general public. In 2022, the German Sailing Association had over 193,000 members. In addition, the past few years show an increasing number of water sports that are increasingly in demand not only in the leisure area, but also as part of sporting competitions. Water sports offers diversity and is accessible to all ages and body types, as is the popularity of activities such as stand up paddling and surfing.
