Congress at 70 years of European law: Experts discuss the future!
In the coming week, a significant congress on the subject of European law will take place from June June 6, 2025 in Saarbrücken. The aim of the event is to compare the rights of the member states and to illuminate the history of the development of European law. The Congress is organized by the Institute for European Law (Ier) of the Saarland University, which celebrates its 70th anniversary this year. Scientists from different European countries, including Spain, Georgia, Poland, Bulgaria, Czech Republic and Germany, will take part in the discussions.
The topic of the congress not only includes the dogmatic problems of European law, but also current applications that occur in the European legal systems. On the first day of the congress, June 4, at 4:30 p.m., a festive event will take place in the Saarbrücken town hall. Minister Jakob von Weizsäcker will appear as the opening speaker, followed by the dean Annette Guckelberger, Professor Claudia Polzin-Haumann and director Tiziana Chiusi. Another highlight is the lecture by Professor Michael Martinek, who will illuminate the development of the institute, as well as the lecture by Professor Juliane Kokott on the subject of "integration through law".

The other events on June 5 and 6 from 9 a.m. in the Faculty of Law of the Saarbrück Campus will include important discussions on a wide range of topics. This includes the influence of Roman law, the right to freedom of movement in the EU, the European inheritance law regulation, and the Europeanization of economic legislation in Georgia. The General Terms and Conditions by the ECJ and the recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments will also be part of the debates.
In addition, the Institute for European Law offers a master's degree in "German law and European legal comparison" and maintains close cooperation with universities in several European countries, including Poland, Czech Republic, Romania, Bulgaria, Georgia, Spain, Italy and China. Public interest in law is also funded by the quarterly publication "Eastern Europe Law", which deals with the current legal systems in Eastern Europe and documents the integration of international law. This magazine analyzes legislation and jurisprudence in the region and thus contributes to the international legal comparison.
