Lahn River Avatar: Ki gives a river voice - opening in Gießen!
Gießen, Deutschland - On June 24, 2025, the innovative art and research project "Lahn River Avatar" will open in the Hessen Lahnen window in Gießen. From 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., the project, coordinated by Panel on Planetary Thinking The Justus-liebig-Universität, presented the public. The aim of the project is to give the Lahn River a voice and to integrate the ecosystem into the political processes of the city of Gießen.
The scholarship holders Danilo Olivaz from Brazil and Ingvild SyTropia from Norway work together to create a digital avatar that analyzes ecological data such as water temperature, pH and electrical conductivity. The avatar is represented by an interactive sculpture that is developed with the support of the Magie-Makerspace Gießen. This reflects the artistic approaches that are increasingly subject to contemporary art and research, especially with regard to ecological and planetary questions.
interactive experiences and common good
As part of the opening, visitors are offered a varied program, which, in addition to a river meditation, also includes the introduction of the project and interactive discussions with the avatar. Admission is free and snacks and drinks are provided. These events invite the public to deal with the questions of ecological justice and the role of non-human actors in political processes. The Gießener Anzeiger emphasizes that the project in the context of the four-year scholarship program "Planetary Scholars & Artists is in Residence" is that from 2022 2025 a total of eight scholarships to promote innovative research and art projects. The Panel on Planetary Thinking pursues the overarching goal of further developing political orders taking into account ecological and planetary processes. Prof. Frederic Hanusch emphasizes the importance of combining nature and humanities in order to promote holistic perspectives in research. In this context there is also the role of the guest scientists in the summer semester 2025, which includes Sophie by Redecker and Erle Ellis in addition to Olivaz and SyTropia.
a contribution to the planetary politics
The origin of the Lahn River Avatar is part of a greater movement that is becoming more important in contemporary art and research. Questions of climate change and ecological responsibility are central aspects that are discussed today in Biennals and large exhibitions. The challenges associated with the climate crisis require an interdisciplinary approach to include both art and science in dialogue about necessary changes. Deutschlandfunk addresses the responsibility of the art business to ask themselves intensively.
In a time when museums and art fairs are considered "climate guessers", new architectural concepts and approaches are required to reduce ecological footprint. The idea of a “climate -friendly museum” is increasingly heard and shows that the combination of art and ecological responsibility could play a central role in the future orientation of cultural institutions.
The Lahn River Avatar, which is permanently positioned in the Hessen Lahn window, not only marks a creative approach to sustainability, but also serves as a teaching and research tool for future generations. Through the creative examination of ecological topics, the project makes a valuable contribution to the development of a responsible and inclusive discourse on our relationship to nature.
