Leipzig in focus: the dispute over the ban on the compact magazine!

On Tuesday, June 10, 2025, the Federal Administrative Court in Leipzig negotiates the ban on the right-wing extremist "Compact" magazine. The process, originally set for February 2024, was postponed due to a high viewer and media rank as well as lack of space in the court halls. A suitable hall was only available in June, so that the negotiation is now being carried out under special safety precautions. Further dates could follow on Wednesday and Thursday, if necessary, reports the LVZ .

The ban on the magazine, which was imposed by the Federal Ministry of the Interior under the then Minister Nancy Faeser in June 2024, is based on the assessment that it acts as the central mouthpiece of the right -wing extremist scene. It is accused of rushing against Jews and people with a history of migration and undermining parliamentary democracy. The ban was pronounced in accordance with Article 9 of the Basic Law, which prohibited associations that endanger the constitutional order. According to the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the magazine has a monthly edition of around 40,000 copies and achieves a range of up to 345,000 subscribers via the YouTube channel, such as dw reports.

Litigation to freedom of the press

The companies and individuals concerned, including the editor-in-chief Jürgen Elsässer, have raised action against the ban, arguing that a press and media company should not be banned on the basis of the association's rights. In an urgent negotiation in August 2024, the court partly decided in favor of the magazine, since many did not consider its content to be attacking. As a result, the magazine was allowed to continue to appear until the final decision. The process evaluates the balance between the protection of freedom of expression and the need to protect human dignity and democratic values, emphasizes BPB .

Freedom of expression in the German Basic Law is guaranteed by Article 5 and also includes freedom to make critical statements against the constitution. At the same time, the possibilities for restricting this freedom are determined under certain circumstances. These include, for example, hate speeches that can be banned in a clear framework. This procedure is expected to have far -reaching implications for dealing with extreme expressions of opinion and their legal assessment and thus also influence the understanding of freedom of the press in Germany.
