Lyme disease warning: Over 100 cases in MV – ticks are active!

A worrying trend is emerging in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: 129 cases of Lyme disease had already been reported by the end of June, according to the State Office for Health and Social Affairs (Lagus) in a current report World. Although this is still behind the 408 infections from the previous year, it should be noted that there are suspected to be a significant number of unreported cases. In contrast, in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein there is no obligation to report Lyme disease, which means the actual spread remains unclear.

The warm temperatures in particular seem to promote tick activity. Already in March 2025 there were loud noises NDR 32 cases reported, compared to 25 in the corresponding period last year. The Barmer health insurance company urges caution as the gardening season begins and the likelihood of tick bites increases.

The dangers of ticks

Ticks not only transmit Lyme disease, but also other diseases such as tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBE). This shows how important it is to check your own skin as well as that of children and pets for ticks, especially after activities in nature. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reports that Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne disease in Germany and can have serious long-term consequences that affect joints, nerves and even the heart.

It is also important that Lyme disease cannot be transmitted from person to person. Treatment usually involves antibiotics, and unfortunately there is currently no vaccination against this disease. Experts recommend using a tick card or fine tweezers to remove the small bloodsuckers to minimize the risk of infection. If ring-shaped reddening of the skin occurs after a tick bite, you should consult a doctor immediately.

Tick seasons and new species

The tick season in Germany has changed due to the mild winters: ticks are now active all year round. The well-known species, especially the Ixodes ricinus, are the main carriers of Lyme disease. The RKI also reports on the Hyalomma genus, which comes to us from other regions and is less widespread. These larger and striped ticks can carry the Crimean-Congo virus, which can cause severe Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever in humans, although such cases have so far been rare in Germany.

Given these developments, it is advisable to be aware of the risks of tick bites and protect yourself accordingly. The current situation makes a good hand in personal health care essential. So stay vigilant, especially in the warm months of the year!
