CDU and AfD: Historic decision for Peene Bridge near Wolgast!

There was a remarkable turnaround in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district council today: for the first time, CDU MPs voted together with the AfD for a proposal to build a suspension bridge over the Peenestrom near Wolgast. This could be seen as a new chapter in the cooperation between the two parties, especially since it is the first time that a motion from the AfD parliamentary group has received a majority in the district council. Five out of eight parliamentary groups support this decision, while the Greens, the SPD and the Left are clearly against it.

The CDU parliamentary group leader Jeannette von Busse emphasized the importance of this bridge. She emphasized that the better connections would bring great benefits to the local people. The aim of the Peene Bridge is not only to improve the connection to the island of Usedom, but also to relieve pressure on Wolgast with a bypass road. Despite this hopeful outlook, there are critical voices. The Greens, SPD and Left accuse the CDU of only pursuing symbolic politics with this decision, since District Administrator Michael Sack has no decision-making authority.

Financial concerns

Another point under debate is the high cost of the project, estimated at over 500 million euros. The Federal Ministry of Transport requires a cost-benefit analysis from the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, which makes implementing the project even more difficult. In this tense economic situation, which is generally characterized by high energy prices, bureaucracy and a glaring shortage of skilled workers, the need for careful consideration and planning is even greater.

The composition of the district council also shows growing concern about cooperation with the AfD. While the federal CDU strictly rejects cooperation, according to a study from 2019 to 2024 in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania there are already over 100 documented cases in which other parties in district councils have cooperated with the AfD. This could put the stance of the federal CDU under long-term pressure and influence the political landscape.

Economic framework conditions

The economic situation in Germany is challenging. The CDU and CSU face the problems with a clear commitment to strengthening the social market economy. High tax burdens and bureaucracy burden citizens and companies. A policy change is therefore called for to create prosperity for all and increase competitiveness. Measures to modernize labor law and attract skilled workers are at the top of the agenda. Income taxes should also be reduced and the commuter allowance increased.

Creating clear framework conditions for agriculture and promoting digitalization are other key concerns. The goal of promoting innovative technologies and securing retirement provision is essential in order to achieve sustainable social and economic balance.

The developments in Vorpommern-Greifswald could not only have an impact on the local infrastructure, but also have far-reaching political and economic implications for the entire region.
