Greens in MV elect Oehlrich as top candidate – turbulence remains!
Constanze Oehlrich has done it: The parliamentary group leader of the Greens in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania was elected as the top candidate for the 2026 state elections. At a state election meeting in Wismar, she received 66 out of 90 votes, which amounts to a crisp 73.3 percent. But her victory was not without its shadows, as the result was the weakest of all 21 applicants for the state list ND currently reported. Despite the current poll numbers of only five percent for the Greens, Oehlrich does not see the possibility of participating in the government as lost.
In her application speech, she criticized the red-red state government and described the situation as a “broken sector” in the state. Her goal for the election campaign is clear: social justice, faster internet expansion and consistent climate protection are at the top of her agenda, as well NDR holds on.
Exciting developments within the party
Despite this internal turmoil, members, including Henriette Held of the Green Youth, emphasized the need for unity. She warned urgently about the rise of the AfD. The challenge posed by this development seems to be of great concern to the party, especially when you consider that the Greens have only entered the Schwerin state parliament twice since 1990, most recently in 2021 with 6.3 percent.
What happens next remains exciting. Oehlrich is ready to contest the election campaign vigorously. The next few months will show whether the Greens in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania can get their problems under control and score points with new ideas.
