Joel Pohjanpalo brought the hosts into the lead in the 31st minute, while Benjamin Källman increased to 2-0 in the 64th minute. Jakub Kiwior's connection goal in the 69th minute was late to turn the game. With this defeat, Poland slips to third place in Group G, behind Finland and the Netherlands.
The game was drawn by further occurrences. The game was interrupted for around 30 minutes in the 73rd minute due to a medical emergency in the stands. Before this interruption, Poland already had several chances, including a header from Krzysztof Piatek in the 6th minute and a shot from Jakub Moder.
missing consistency without Lewandowski
The match is the first qualification game after Lewandowski's resignation from the national team. The player announced his decision on the weekend after the captain's armband was to be withdrawn from the national coach Michal Tasty. Lewandowski, who celebrated countless successes during his career, wanted to play for the fans again, but also said that he had lost confidence in the coach. This led to mixed reactions among fans, from support to criticism of his decision.
The absence of the undisputed star was particularly painfully noticeable in this encounter. Despite 23 shooting chances, the Polish team could not convince on the offensive and left valuable possibilities unused.
Austria and the Netherlands on World Cup course
While Poland took place on the spot, Austria was able to further expand its successful balance sheet. In an impressive game, the Austrian national team San Marino defeated 4-0. Marko Arnautovic, Michael Gregoritsch and Christoph Baumgartner entered the goal scorer list, while the Netherlands also had a significant victory - an 8-0 against Malta, led by Memphis Depay. Austria and the Netherlands are strong in qualification and are clearly on course for the World Cup.
So it will be exciting how the Polish national team will continue without their star and whether she can get the curve in the coming games.
