Russian drone attacks in Ukraine: record numbers and civilian victims

On May 27, 2025, Ukraine reported on an alarming record of Russian drone attacks that were carried out on Monday to Tuesday. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the attacks as a sign that Moscow is "undisputed". According to official sources, the Ukrainian air defense was able to intercept most of the 355 drones, but some broke through the defense and led to sacrifice. Tragically, two older women were killed in the northeastern region of Charkiw.

In addition, the Russian Ministry of Defense stated that at least 48 Ukrainian drones and 96 were shot down the day before on Monday. At the same time, Russian armed forces have taken control of several villages in the northeastern region of Sumy, including Volodymyrivka and Belovody as well as the villages of Novenke, Basivka, Veselivka and Zhuravka, as reported by Sumy.

civilian victims in focus

The Ukrainian public prosecutor reported that 630 children in Ukraine have been killed by Russian attacks and 1,960 were injured since the conflict. The Russian special envoy Rodion Miroshnik, on the other hand, accused the Ukrainian military leadership of causing over 400 civilian victims in April.

In the context of international military aid, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that the western allies of Ukraine will no longer restrict the reach of the weapons delivered. This decision could further influence the conflict. It was also confirmed that Ukraine has information about Chinese deliveries to Russian military works, including machine tools and chemical products.

look at international politics

The geopolitical situation continues to come to a head. The Kremlin reacted to statements by US President Donald Trump about Vladimir Putin and spoke of "emotional overload". In addition, the Kremlin indicated that a proposal for a possible peace treaty is being worked on, but a formal design has not yet been submitted.

France President Emmanuel Macron said that Trump gradually realized that Putin "lied to" him in terms of war in Ukraine. Macron called for a deadline for Moscow to agree with an armistice, supported by the threat of "massive sanctions". Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said that Russia's attacks on Ukraine make it clear that Moscow is not interested in peace.

In addition, Finland has ordered the Russian ambassador to Helsinki to request an explanation of a suspected violation of Finnish airspace.

The situation remains tense and shows the constant effects of armed conflicts that manifest themselves in all world regions. The analysis of these conflicts is crucial in order to gain a deeper understanding of the causes and effects of these wars, as it is discussed in peace research in order to develop possible ways of coping with conflict and peace strategies.

The challenges mentioned are in line with the experiences and reports of the US Air War, in which civilian victims were systematically accepted, with devastating consequences for the affected regions and their population, such as an incident in Ramadi in Iraq in 2015, in which innocent civilians were sacrificed.
