Carnival starts in MV: Wismar celebrates a grand opening on November 11th!
A happy spectacle is coming to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania! The carnival season begins on November 11, 2025, and the celebrations start promptly at 11:11 a.m. The Wismarer Karneval Club e.V. has taken up the cause of the central state opening on the historic market square in Wismar. From 10:00 a.m., the city center will be conquered by a colorful parade featuring dance guards, music groups and costumed participants. A highlight will be the traditional storming of the town hall, during which the royal couple will receive the city key.
It's not just a celebration in Wismar, but also in other cities and communities in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Small parades and costume parties are on the program in Schwerin, Greifswald and Neubrandenburg. Advance ticket sales for the ceremonial meetings in January are already underway in Feldberg. November 11th marks the beginning of the “fifth season” and enthusiasm for carnival is constantly growing in the region. With their events, carnival clubs set an unmistakable sign of cohesion and joy of life, as pommerscher-greif.de emphasizes.
Preparing for the fifth season
An important step towards a successful carnival is the preparation of the future prince couples. On October 19, 2025, a workshop took place at the Golchener Hof, which aimed to give aspiring madmen insights into their role. Under the leadership of the 2023/2024 state prince couple, Alina and Steven Bieneas, tips and tricks that are necessary for a brilliant performance were conveyed.
The program ranged from an excursion into the tradition and history of carnival to dance training with Julia Schlebusch, in which dances such as the Viennese Waltz and Discofox were practiced. The final note came from Jörg Klingohr, alias “Bauer Korl”, who gave the prospective prince couples exciting tips on stage presence and the prince couple speech. “karneval-mv.de” emphasizes that the focus was on knowledge, exercise and fun in order to start the fifth season well prepared.
A look into history
Carnival has a long and traditional history in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Lutz Scherling gives a deep insight into these cultural roots in his lecture at the German Cultural Council “The fifth season in the northeastern diaspora”. These insights into the past help to understand why the celebrations are so important in the region and why people start the carnival season with so much enthusiasm and joy.
So we can look forward to a colorful and happy carnival that not only upholds traditions, but also celebrates the community spirit of the people in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Be there when the motto on November 11th is: “Kölle Alaaf!” and let yourself be infected by the joy of life and solidarity!
