Wismar District Music School: Moving into containers meets with resistance!

Things are simmering in Wismar: the future of the Carl Orff district music school is in the balance. The Northwest Mecklenburg District Council will meet on October 9, 2025 to discuss whether the building is necessary. One thing is clear: in two years, the old school building on the gymnasium will urgently need to be renovated if we don't want to run the risk of the traditional music school having to cease operations. The solution: temporary accommodation in containers during the renovation work.

How NDR reported, the parliamentary groups in the district council have revised their proposals and the majority are voting in favor of building a replacement container. The ideas of the SPD, the Left and the Greens, which originally called for the building to be taken over and comprehensively renovated, have now been supplemented by a further inspection order. The AfD has also dropped its demand to purchase the building and is now proposing a long-term concept.

Parents' worries

The plans for the containers have met with strong criticism from parents' representatives. They fear that a container solution will not only impair the educational conditions, but will also make it extremely difficult for younger students to reach them. The new container building in Wismar-Wendorf is difficult to access and could disadvantage families without a car. A parent representative emphasizes that the containers do not even offer special space for dance, theater or drums and that the sound insulation leaves a lot to be desired. Wismar FM reports that an online petition has already been started to stop the container solution at the Mozartstrasse location.

Over 700 students currently use the location at the Turnplatz, which is considered the cultural heart of Wismar. A relocation could have serious consequences for the music school - not only for the students, but also for teachers who may leave. The concerns are great, especially considering that the agreement for the use of the gymnasium ends at the end of August 2027 and the renovation of the building is expected to take three years. Loud daily news The renovation is estimated to cost at least 13 million euros, an amount that could have an impact on students' future user fees.

An outlook on the debate

The debate about the district music school will drag on until the district council meeting on October 15, 2025. Wismar's mayor, Thomas Beyer (SPD), expresses skepticism about the availability of suitable urban buildings after 2027, which once again underlines the urgency of the container solution. The question remains: Will there be a good hand for the musical education of Wismar's children or will they face an uncertain future? The coming weeks will certainly be exciting, and parents' support is needed more than ever.
