The carp are coming back: 50,000 euros for Lewitz fish farming!
In the picturesque Lewitz, fish will soon be back on the menu. The tradition of carp farming is being revived at the Lewitz ponds after the Ministry of Agriculture was able to promise generous support. How NDR reports, Minister Till Backhaus presented the newly founded company “Lewitep” with a grant of 50,000 euros. These funds will go towards the construction of a modern fish processing and sales hall, which is intended to support the old fishing craft in the region.
A look at history shows that carp have been bred in the Lewitz since 1897, and so that this tradition is not forgotten, there are also plans to breed carp again in the extensive pond area of 160 hectares. It is not for nothing that the Lewitz is considered the largest pond farm in Northern Germany. But other fish species such as pike, perch, catfish and roach also swim in these waters and round off the diverse offering The Lewitz shows.
A new beginning with sustainability
The decline in fish farming in the region has recently been a real problem, not least due to new nature conservation regulations. These planned measures focus on the concerns of nature and sustainable production. But with the special permit for gentle fishing, which is already available for some of the ponds, fish can now be bred sustainably. Backhaus emphasized that this development could make the Lewitz a model model in the area of natural climate protection.
The carp harvest, which lasts from the end of September to the first weekend in November, attracts many visitors every year. At this folk festival on the Neuhofer company premises, fresh products are available directly from the pond. During the weeks in which the harvest is underway, around 150 tons of fish are caught, which are then relocated to tanks and sold live.
Fish from German aquaculture is trendy
The importance of domestic fish farming also becomes clear when looking at national aquaculture. How agriculture.de shows, German aquaculture reflects a high technical level, even if there are some economic problems. Locally produced fish remains a niche product and carp is one of the few exceptions - especially if it comes from traditional pond farms.
The carp has a good environmental balance, and what is more important is that it grows naturally in the Lewitz, without medication and with minimal use of feed. This type of farming, which relies primarily on the sustainable use of natural resources, ensures that the region not only flourishes in culinary terms, but also functions as an ecological refuge for endangered species. The new initiatives to improve the region's fish availability not only contribute to the local economy, they also ensure a sustainable ecological balance.
