Major fire near Ludwigslust: 10,000 chickens died in barn fire!
A devastating fire raged today in a poultry house near Picher, in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district, claiming the lives of around 10,000 animals, mostly chickens. The fire brigade with around 120 emergency services from the region was in constant use to fight the flames. The situation was initially unclear as massive smoke development impaired visibility. Members of the public were urged to keep doors and windows closed, while motorists on the nearby A24 were warned about the smoke. The estimated property damage is one million euros and the cause of the fire is currently unclear. Investigations into negligent arson have been initiated NDR reported.
The firefighting effort lasted for hours and the firefighters, including around 60 who worked through the night, faced enormous challenges. A residential building had to be evacuated and the temperatures also endangered the work of the fire investigators, who are unlikely to be able to begin their work until Tuesday, as in another report by star is to be read.
The importance of preparation
Such disasters are a part of life in livestock farming and managing barn fires is an issue that should not be underestimated in the industry. Prof. Eva Zeiler from Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University highlights the challenges caused by numerous injured animals. Triage needs to happen, similar to what happens with people. Personal protection is also a top priority - a point that Hubert Bittlmayer, head of the Bavarian Ministry of Agriculture, emphasizes in his statement. Preventive measures to avoid fires and support affected families are of great importance. This shows how necessary well-thought-out emergency plans are for farmers.
Collaboration between farmers and firefighters is crucial. How Weekly newspaper DLV reports, the BBV regularly carries out exercises with firefighters on farms in order to be able to act quickly and effectively in an emergency. Thanks go to the fire brigades for their tireless efforts, which also saved lives that night.
