The cost of this significant work is estimated to be 2.2 billion euros. This is done in the context of great investments by the federal government, which are expressly welcomed by the Hamburg Metropolitan Region. However, the necessity of a powerful rail replacement traffic is also addressed, since the fully locked route is one of the most used in Germany. The associated diversions and replacement bus traffic not only represent a logistical challenge, but also bring great inconvenience for the travelers concerned.

The full closure not only affects long -distance trains, but also various regional railway lines such as RE2, RE6, RE8, RB10 and RB14. These detours and the associated positive changes in regional traffic are a bitter pill for many who commute between the big cities every day. For example, the RE2 from Cottbus is diverted to Hennigsdorf, while the Re6 leads via Löwenberg to Berlin-Gesundbrunnen. This requires additional bypass and extends the travel times considerably.

The Pro Bahn passenger association has already made mood and demands a “single -track management” to alleviate the effects of full closure. However, this requirement was rejected by Deutsche Bahn. Over 170 buses are said to travel up to 86,000 kilometers a day. Travelers have to adjust to longer travel times during the transition period, while the long -distance trains between Hamburg and Berlin are diverted and the travel time increases to two and a half hours.

Long -distance transport is also not spared: trains that commute between Hamburg and Berlin are led via Stendal and Uelzen. This will significantly extend the travel time, so that passengers now have to expect an additional travel time of up to 45 minutes. For travelers who choose the route via Hanover, there are even three hours and ten minutes to plan.

The DB has also announced virtual information events to inform the population and commuters about the upcoming changes. These platforms are intended to help clear out ambiguities and to make future planning transparently. The timetable will now also be available on the website of the Deutsche Bahn and in the app db navigator.
