Complete closure of the A14 near Schwerin: Bridge inspection causes traffic jams!
Important information for drivers: As of today, September 15, 2025, the A14 motorway near Schwerin will be at a standstill due to extensive bridge testing. Initially the route in the direction of Wismar was affected, now travelers in the direction of Dresden also have to resort to a diversion. The full closure applies between the Schwerin-Ost junction and the Schwerin junction. Loud NDR The route will remain completely closed until midday on Friday, September 19, 2025.
The tests on the Störkanal Bridge are necessary because it has been under observation for years and already has a speed limit of 80 km/h. The responsible authorities have announced that intensive controls will be carried out. During these tests, material samples are taken every 50 centimeters in order to precisely analyze the condition of the bridge. This was also done by Northern Courier reported. The bridge is too narrow for traffic, which is why full closure is unavoidable.
Detours and traffic adjustments
In order to maintain traffic flow, commuters and travelers have to switch to the busy state road 72 or consider a large-scale bypass. This measure affects over 12,000 cars and almost 1,300 trucks every day that normally use this section of the A14.
In addition to the inspections, mowing and cleaning work as well as new road markings will also be carried out during the closure. The motorway company expects that these measures will increase road safety in the long term.
Modernization of the bridge infrastructure
The Störkanal bridge is part of a larger problem: In Germany there are around 40,100 bridges in the federal highway network, many of which urgently need to be modernized. There are currently around 8,000 motorway bridges that should be repaired or modernized, like this Federal Ministry of Transport highlights.
A comprehensive modernization program is being planned. It is intended to ensure that the majority of heavily used bridges are modernized by 2033. This is to be supported by increasing maintenance investments from 4.6 billion euros to 5 billion euros by 2025. The ongoing tests and modernizations are a step in this direction and are intended to ensure that the infrastructure is ready for the coming years.
Overall, these measures show that this is not just a short-term solution, but part of a long-term plan for Germany's bridge infrastructure. Travel time will be extended during the lockdown, but in the long term the safety and efficiency of transport infrastructure will be improved.
