100 years of Müritz: How Waren became a magnet for tourists!

Waren an der Müritz, a charming town in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with around 21,000 inhabitants, celebrates a proud history that is closely linked to the gentle charm of Germany's largest inland lake, the Müritz. The lake covers an impressive 117 square kilometers and is the heart of the region. Tourism has been the most important industry here for more than a century and brings a breath of fresh air to the city. District newspaper reports that Theodor Fontane stayed in Waren for six weeks in 1896 and promoted tourism with his positive stories. A real stroke of luck for the city!

The first bathing establishment on the Müritz was opened in 1845 and laid the foundation for the tourism hype that really took off in 1900. Despite the challenges that the city had to overcome after the Second World War - tourism stagnated for almost ten years - Waren managed to obtain the title of "climatic health resort" in 1954, which the city has proudly worn again since 1999. Waren even held this title in the 1920s, which underlines its importance as a resort. Commodity tourism provides information about the clean air and the attractive natural beauty that attract many visitors.

Modern and vital: the further development of tourism

The story continues: In 2012, Waren received the title of “state-recognized spa”, an important step that further underlines the city’s health offerings. The Waren thermal brine is a local remedy that can now also be actively used to improve the health of visitors thanks to the newly opened spa center on the Warener Nesselberg. The city has since developed into a health center that is characterized by a wide range of offerings.

The reconstruction of the historic old town and the beautiful landscapes around the Müritz contribute significantly to its attractiveness for tourists. A particular attraction is the Müritzeum, a modern nature discovery center that attracts thousands of visitors every year. So it's clear: there's a lot to offer in Waren an der Müritz, and the city has a good hand when it comes to welcoming its guests and offering them unforgettable experiences.
